Proposed ESUHSD Budget Cuts Threaten Student Services and Classrooms, Preserve District Office Administration

Chrizia Dela Rosa, one of our ESTA members and math teacher at Piedmont Hills High School, has been honored as one of 5 California Teachers of the Year! Op-Ed from ESUHSD Trustee Bryan Do regarding a deeply concerning matter.

Trustee Do outlines how ESUHSD Board President Van Le and Trustee Manuel Herrera violated the Brown Act for the second time in less than a year by arbitrarily and without notice restricting student speaking time.

For reducing public comment from 2 minutes to 1, specifically after seeing students who had waited hours with signs to advocate for their AP science classes, these board members effectively attempted to silence the very voices we are here to serve. This stance in stark contrast to previous meetings where the "red carpet" was rolled out for charter school supporters and political elites who were granted their full time to speak.

Targeting our students with these limitations simply because they were prepared to advocate for change as the betrayal of the democratic process. It is unacceptable to see political interests prioritize over the rights and participation of our students. The students of ESUHSD are the heart of our work. When board members devalue student input and disregard transparency, they fail in their primary responsibility to this district. As educators, we cannot support leadership that refuses to prioritize the voices of our students

Ms. Vanessa Ferrando, one of our Spanish teachers at Andrew Hill High School, is coordinating a school-wide food drive with her student club and fellow ESTA members, Jen Eckley and Damien Quach. The drive runs Nov. 4–21. All in-kind donations will be delivered to Loaves & Fishes, one of our trusted community partners.

We want to assure families that students will continue to receive free brunch, lunch, and supper every day through the Universal Meals Program. ESUHSD remains committed to providing healthy, balanced meals that include hot entrées, fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, and juice.

At the last ESTA assembly meeting, the reps voted in favor of endorsing the No Kings action.

Immigrants, regardless of their status, make up an essential part of our community. They are our members and the students we serve. Santa Clara County's population born outside of the United States is 41%, 17.5% of whom are undocumented. Immigrants are a strong, contributing, and vital part of the social fabric of the United States, equal in worth, dignity, and freedom to participate in all aspects of society.

Join unions and community based groups in the yearly May Day march in San Jose. March starts at 4pm at Story Rd. & King Rd. and ends at San Jose City Hall. March behind the ESTA banner. Wear your ESTA gear!

Where should I park?
There's a couple of options:
1. In the past parking at one of the parking spots in one of the shopping centers has been fine. ESTA is not responsible for anything that happens to your car.
2. Park in a neighborhood around the starting point. ESTA is not responsible for anything that happens to your car.
3. Get dropped off.
4. Take public transportation.
5. Coordinate with ESTA members to carpool.

How long is the march?
It's from Story Rd/King Rd. to San Jose City Hall. It's 3.2 miles. It usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. So wear comfortable walking shoes. Temperature highs will reach 77 degrees, so it won't be too hot. Please bring water.

How can I get back to the starting point?
A couple of options:
1. Walk back to your car (great for those that want a very aerobic workout!)
2. Use public transportation (take VTA 22 back to King Rd. & Story Rd.)
3. Coordinate with someone to park their car near San Jose City Hall, join you at the end rally and then give you a ride back to your car.

Is it kid friendly?
Yes! Hundreds of kids participate yearly.

Is it dog friendly?
Yes! We've seen many dogs at previous actions. Please bring dog baggies!

Congratulations to all of the site winners for ESUHSD Certificated Employees of the Year! You all do amazing work for our students, our schools and our district. The site winners will be interviewed by HR to select one to represent the district at the county level!

ESTA members & allies to immigrants: please attend this Rapid Response Network training to be volunteers of the network and know how to provide accompaniment support during and after a community member’s arrest or detention by ICE (immigration). The Rapid Response Network is a community defense project developed to protect immigrant families from deportation threats and to provide accompaniment support during and after a community member’s arrest or detention.

When we fight, we win!

We have reached a mediated compensated agreement. The district had originally offered a 1.1% raise before we engaged in mediation.

What we won: 3.5% total raise for the 24-25 school year which includes a 2.25% on-going and 1.25% one-time funds.

ESTA members will receive copies of the tentative agreement to review prior to the ratification vote.
